TREES OF INDIANA

Sally Weeks and Dr. George Parker, of Purdue's Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, have just released Trees of Indiana, a comprehensive guide to all the native trees of Indiana on CD-ROM.  Bayou Bill Scifres, a long time outdoors writer for the Indianapolis Star said of the CD: "It is the greatest aid to the study of (native) trees I have ever seen."  It provides detailed descriptions of 102 species native to the state, as well as 16 trees that are native to surrounding states or introduced in the Midwest.  Over 1000 color images illustrate leaves, buds, twigs, flowers, fruit, bark, habitat and form.  Many images provide comparisons of similar traits among closely related species.  Highlighted terminology allows the user to obtain definitions easily.  species can be found quickly from a species list or by searching through a key.

The CD was initially designed for students of Dendrology at Purdue, but has been modified to accommodate just about everyone.  to view a demo of the CD, see the website www.agriculture.purdue.edu/fnr/Extension/SallyCD.htm

The Trees of Indiana can be purchased at Purdue's Media Distribution Center by calling 1-888-EXT-INFO (398-4636).  A single copy is $25; multiples of 10 or more are $20 each.
