Tri-State Logging Top Indiana Logger
At the recent Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen's Association (IHLA) Convention in Indianapolis, Lt. Governor
Joseph Kernan took part in ceremonies to honor Steve Close, Tri-State Logging, Bowling
Green, IN as Logger of the year. The award is presented annually by the Indiana Tree Farm Committee to recognize excellence
in the logging industry. Nominated by Joe Davison, Close is described as "a
responsible, hard-working, family-oriented guy." Tri-State Logging has an annual production of 1.2 million board feet. His
company's training includes all the phases of the Game of Logging on cutting, skidding and
safety training. He stays current on all phases of logging equipment and practices and his
jobs reflect that training with directional felling, logging road location and erosion
control.
"It is important to the environment, the health of the resource, the economy and
my business for well-managed forests and skilled harvest operations to be recognized by
the industry," says Close. "It's certainly an honor to be recognized by the Indiana Tree Farm Committee." Before each
harvest Close meets with landowners to located skid trails and to be sure that all parties
understand the process. His crews wear safety equipment at all times in the woods and know
how to protect the residual stands during harvest. The Indiana Tree Farm Committee is
sponsored by IHLA. The Association, founded in
1899, represents sawmills and veneer mills, wholesale brokers, manufacturers and
industry-related vendors in Indiana and throughout the Midwestern hardwood region.
